Congressman Amash visits Micron

Congressman Justin Amash (R, MI-3) of Grand Rapids visited Micron on Monday, April 30^th. The one-hour tour focused on Micron’s 60 year history, its family ownership and the state of the precision machining industry. During the tour the Congressman asked several questions to guides Dan Vermeesch and Walt Alexander concerning the challenges Micron is faced with as a small manufacturer. The discussion ranged from corporate taxes, to the 25% health care increase incurred in 2012, the significant amount of time required to satisfy the EPA requirements for the Toxic Release Inventory reporting and the challenge of finding employees with skills matching our needs.

After the tour the Congressman addressed the entire company congratulating everyone for their “efforts and hard work”. During his speech the Congressman discussed:

the fact that the US now has the highest corporate tax rate in the industrialized world as of April 1^st and the impact that has on business,
the challenges imposed on businesses when bureaucrats create environmental guidelines with no understanding of the impact on business, and that sometimes the best Congress can do is “keep them from hurting us more”,
the budgetary need to allow the student loan rates to return
and the fact that he (Congress) pays 25% of his healthcare costs like we do.

After his remarks he took several questions:

Question: After the Senate vote on the “ambush elections” are we safe from having to deal with that in the future?

Answer: It wouldn’t be safe to consider ourselves safe from that issue for the foreseeable future.

Question: What was the biggest culture shock for you being a Freshman Congressman?

Answer: The negative feelings the parties actually have about each other and the lack of co-operation between the two parties. They tend to stick to the party line views even though their principles are similar. How little people who have been serving for a long time (20 years or more) are willing to consider new ways of doing things.

Question: How hard do you have to “fight” for your issues due to you being one of the youngest and newest members of Congress?

Answer: It can be difficult to have your ideas accepted by senior members of congress being the one of the “Freshman” in Congress until you establish the respect and acceptance by the older members.

Question: What issues keep you up at night?

Answer: There are several. One deals with civil liberties. Another is the budget. There are members who refuse to consider a one percent budget cut. They think that the budget should be the same year after year. You wouldn’t run your households or business that way, yet they feel that is the way the government should work. Forty percent of the money the government spends is borrowed which means only sixty percent of the money comes from taxes. We can’t keep going this way. We need to cut wasteful spending in the federal government. Some conservatives say that we should cut everywhere but the military. I disagree just ask people who have served and they can tell you that there is waste in the military. Waste that should be cut.
